Kapihan Conversation: Reflecting on PNAA’s Legacy, Celebrating Impact, and Building the Future Together
The Philippine Nurses Association of America (PNAA) recently gathered for a meaningful Kapihan conversation on 6/23/2026, bringing together leaders, past presidents, and members to reflect on the organization’s journey—its proud history, current impact, and future direction.
Centered on the theme of Past, Present, and Future, the discussion highlighted the foundation built by generations of Filipino-American nurses and the continued commitment to service, leadership, advocacy, and community.
Honoring the Past: A Legacy Built Through Service
Dr. Saria opened the conversation by celebrating PNAA’s rich history, tracing its beginnings back to 1979, when Dr. Carlina Miraflor helped establish the organization with five chapters. From those humble beginnings, PNAA has grown into a nationally recognized organization with visibility across the United States and globally.
Today, PNAA continues to thrive with more than 6,700 members and counting, a testament to the dedication and commitment of those who came before us.
“Our accomplishments today are built upon the work of past presidents and leaders who dedicated their time, passion, and service,” shared Dr. Saria.
The organization’s growth reflects decades of perseverance, collaboration, and the belief that Filipino-American nurses have a powerful voice in healthcare.
The Heart of PNAA: Members, Belonging, and Community
Former PNAA President Dr. Doliente emphasized that PNAA has always been about the members.
Leadership within PNAA is unique—it is a volunteer commitment fueled by purpose. Many members continue to serve long after retirement, remaining engaged, attending events, mentoring others, and contributing their expertise.
“You cannot put a price tag on that,” Dr. Doliente shared, highlighting the dedication of members who continue to give back because PNAA feels like home.
For many internationally educated nurses (IENs), PNAA provides more than professional connection—it provides identity, belonging, and community.
Members described PNAA as a “second home,” a place where Filipino nurses can celebrate shared experiences, culture, and traditions while embracing diversity. From professional gatherings to cultural moments—like sharing Filipino traditions at national healthcare events—PNAA creates a space where members feel connected.
The Present: Visibility, Advocacy, and Impact
A major strength of PNAA continues to be its chapters. As Dr. Saria shared, chapters are the face of PNAA. Communities often experience the organization first through local chapter activities—health screenings, community outreach, Philippine Independence celebrations, professional programs, and service initiatives. The impact of PNAA is seen not only during national conventions but every day through the quiet work of volunteers.
Behind the scenes, chapter leaders, committees, and members continue to strengthen the organization through:
Community engagement
Leadership development
Mentorship
Membership initiatives
Professional advancement opportunities
“Day in and day out, members are quietly working. They keep us connected,” shared Dr. Doliente.
National programs such as Camp Aruga, P3, and iLDP represent opportunities to celebrate local accomplishments, share best practices, recognize achievements, and develop future leaders.
Creating Opportunities for Every Member
A key discussion focused on how PNAA can continue helping members find their place within the organization.
Leaders emphasized that involvement should not feel intimidating. Instead of asking members to simply volunteer, PNAA should ask:
“What interests you?”
“What strengths do you bring?”
“What would you like to contribute?”
Matching members’ passions, availability, and skills with meaningful opportunities creates a stronger sense of ownership and belonging. Whether a member is interested in fundraising, education, mentorship, community outreach, leadership development, or professional programs, there is a place for them in PNAA. The conversation also highlighted the importance of recognizing that every member has something valuable to offer—whether they have advanced degrees and titles or are simply willing to show up and serve.
Leadership, Mentorship, and Succession Planning
PNAA’s future depends on developing leaders at every level.
The discussion emphasized:
Engaging the next generation of nurses
Creating opportunities for retirees to continue contributing
Strengthening mentorship programs
Building leadership pipelines
Preparing chapters for future transitions
Members were encouraged to look beyond traditional leadership roles and recognize the many ways they can serve.
Leadership is not only about titles—it is about impact, collaboration, and service.
The Future: Innovation, Relevance, and Legacy
When asked what PNAA needs to continue moving forward, leaders shared three powerful themes:
Relationships. Commitment. Community.
Dr. Saria emphasized that PNAA’s strength comes from its ability to create impact and influence through meaningful connections. Dr. Doliente added: “Innovate and inspire.” The future of PNAA requires resilience, collaboration, mentorship, and a continued commitment to serving the community. The discussion also reflected on the importance of remaining relevant. A powerful reminder shared during the forum: “Do not aim to be successful. Aim to be relevant.” Success follows when an organization understands the needs of its members and creates value that matters to them.
Strengthening Unity Through Everyday Actions
Unity does not mean the absence of challenges or differences. As Dr. Saria shared, unity means choosing to think about what is best for the organization and its mission.
Small actions strengthen PNAA:
Welcoming new members
Recognizing contributions
Sharing information
Mentoring others
Supporting fellow nurses
Staying engaged
Members were reminded that PNAA’s future cannot depend only on elected leaders. It depends on every member choosing to participate.
A Call to Action: Show Up and Stay Involved
The closing message was simple yet powerful: Show up. Stay involved. Volunteer for one project. Recruit one member. Commit to one meaningful action.
Every member has a role in strengthening the heartbeat of PNAA. As the organization continues to grow, its future will be shaped not only by its leaders—but by the collective passion, service, and commitment of its members.PNAA’s story continues because its members continue to serve.
Together, we honor the past, celebrate the present, and build the future.
